The Economic Effects of the Corona pandemic on the Family A Study On a Sample of Mothers in Riyadh City

Abstract

This study aims to identify, in the opinion of mothers, the economic effects of the covid-19 pandemic and quarantine on family members in Riyadh, and their differences according to some independent variables. The sample consists of 600 mothers living with families in Riyadh. This study used a questionnaire and social survey method.
Main findings: The majority of the sample agreed on some positive economic effects of the pandemic on family members, including that families realize their ability to have entertainment at home with the least expenses without spending a lot of money (49% agreed and 42% somehow agreed), and that family members have continued in their jobs during the pandemic (39% agreed and 39% somehow agreed).The family also have saved some money as a result of abandoning nonessentials (36% agreed and 44% somehow agreed), and there was an increase in the families’ online purchases (41% agreed and 38% somehow agreed).
In contrast, The majority of the sample population (76%) disagree that the pandemic was a reason for losing their income, and (52%) of them disagree it was a reason for a decrease in their income.
More positive economic effects were claimed in Saudis compared to Non-Saudis, more in women whose husbands’ age category of 60 and older compared to other age categories, and more in families with couples whose marriage years are 25+ years compared to people with marriage years of less than 15 years.
