Problems arising from the use of social media by adolescents and the role of social service in dealing with them

Abstract

The study aimed to identify the reasons that lead to adolescents' use of social media, identify the family, social and educational problems resulting from adolescents' use of social media, and identify the role of social work towards adolescents to alleviate the severity of the problems resulting from their use of social media. This study belongs to descriptive studies and the social survey method was used with a sample of secondary school students in the Ma'asara Educational Administration. A questionnaire form was used and the sample consisted of 373 male and female secondary school students. The study concluded that the most important social media sites used are Facebook, WhatsApp, Snapchat and Instagram, and that the highest percentage spends five hours or more on social media sites daily. The most important reasons for adolescents' use of social media are entertainment, amusement, spending free time, playing electronic games and getting to know new friends, and that there is a negative relationship between adolescents' use of social media on their family and social relationships and their academic achievement.
