Abstract

This study aimed to explore the forms of social recognition (emotional, legal, and social) that Saudi youth seek to achieve through the X platform, based on Axel Honneth’s theory of recognition. It also sought to understand the dimensions of self-actualization associated with these forms of recognition, including self-confidence, self-respect, and self-esteem. The X platform highlighted as a social networking tool that enables youth to interact, receive support, and gain recognition, which positively affects their identity formation and self-actualization.
The study adopted a case study approach, utilizing in-depth interviews as the primary research tool. The purposive sample consisted of 21 young Saudi users of the X platform, categorized into three groups based on their circumstances: physical health conditions, psychological conditions, and social challenges. This methodology allowed for a comprehensive analysis of the mechanisms of social recognition and their relationship to self-actualization.
The study revealed several key findings: The X platform contributes to emotional recognition by enhancing social capital, emotional fulfillment, and social support, which strengthens young users’ sense of belonging and social cohesion while providing psychological and emotional support. The platform promotes legal recognition by empowering young people to understand their rights, express their concerns through visibility and voice, and engage with relevant authorities and decision-makers, thereby enhancing their self-respect. Additionally, social recognition reinforced through digital solidarity, social integration, and recognition of qualifications and opportunities, allowing young users to highlight their achievements, expand their social networks, and gain societal appreciation. The study recommends promoting digital initiatives that foster social solidarity, such as community campaigns supporting youth facing health, psychological, or social challenges. Furthermore, it suggests enhancing psychological and social support programs on the platform by creating dedicated digital communities that offer emotional support and assistance to young people dealing with various challenges.
