A proposed strategy to enhance the role of Egyptian universities in achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals

Abstract

The study aimed to identify the role of Egyptian universities in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals 2030, and to identify the obstacles facing Egyptian universities and mechanisms to enhance the role of Egyptian universities, in addition to building a proposed strategy to enhance the role of Egyptian universities in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals 2030. This study is a descriptive analytical study, and the researcher relied on the social survey method by sample, and the study community is determined by faculty members at Egyptian universities, and the study sample was determined by a simple random sample of faculty members at Egyptian universities, consisting of (585) faculty members from universities (Alexandria University, Damanhour University, Tanta University, Kafr El-Sheikh University, Mansoura University, Banha University) and the study relied on a questionnaire tool for faculty members at Egyptian universities.
The results of the study confirmed that the role of Egyptian universities in achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals was represented in: conducting scientific research in sustainable development, organizing scientific conferences on sustainable development, providing community institutions with academic experts, developing a culture of sustainable development among students, and building strategic plans in sustainable development. The obstacles facing Egyptian universities in achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals were represented in: not relying on operational planning, weak funding sources, weak culture of strategic thinking, the gap between field and academic experts, lack of experts in the field of sustainable development, and failure to benefit from the experiences of successful countries. The mechanisms for enhancing the role of Egyptian universities in achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals were represented in: strategic planning, social investment, social and economic empowerment, social justice, institutional excellence, social innovation, digital transformation, sustainability, evaluation, follow-up, and artificial intelligence. The results of the study also confirmed that the most important proposals to enhance the role of Egyptian universities in achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals were represented in: benefiting from the experiences of successful countries, relying on operational planning, attracting experts in the field of sustainable development, achieving integration between sustainable development plans, and supporting funding sources for sustainable development plans. Developing a culture of strategic thinking, planning to confront the phenomenon of unemployment.
