Abstract

Research Title:
Practicing a cognitive-behavioral program to alleviate social isolation for mothers of autistic children
Abstract:
Mothers of children with autism face unique pressures and challenges stemming from the nature of their children's autism spectrum disorder, making them particularly vulnerable to social isolation. This social isolation has profound negative effects on mothers' mental and emotional health, significantly impacting their quality of life. Research indicates that feelings of loneliness and social disconnection are associated with increased risks of depression, anxiety, and overall health deterioration.
The Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approach offers a promising therapeutic framework for addressing the psychological and social factors related to social isolation. CBT focuses on identifying and modifying negative thoughts and beliefs that may contribute to feelings of isolation, while developing essential social skills for establishing and maintaining positive relationships.
When implemented from a general social work practice perspective, this approach holistically considers the mothers' life contexts and diverse needs, emphasizing empowerment and enhancing their adaptive capacities for social interaction across various environments.
