Abstract

Environmental awareness is one of the fundamental pillars for achieving sustainable development, especially in light of the increasing challenges posed by climate change at both local and global levels. This study aims to explore the contributions of virtual communities in enhancing university students’ awareness of the risks associated with climate change, by analyzing the role of digital platforms and online interactions in disseminating environmental knowledge and promoting sustainable behaviors. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, including the distribution of electronic questionnaires to a sample of university students, as well as a content analysis of educational and environmental virtual communities. The results indicate that active participation in virtual communities contributes to raising students’ environmental awareness, enhances their understanding of the causes and impacts of climate change, and encourages the adoption of environmentally friendly behaviors in daily life. The study identifies influencing factors such as the type of digital activity, duration of participation, and level of engagement with the provided content. The research concludes that leveraging virtual platforms represents a strategic tool to deepen environmental culture among university youth, thereby preparing a generation capable of addressing environmental challenges and making sustainable decisions.
