Virtual Romantic Relationships and Their Impact on Family Stability A field study applied to a sample of Saudi nuclear families

Abstract

This study aimed to know the reality of virtual romantic relationships in Saudi society, identify the motivations behind forming virtual romantic relationships, and examine the impact of virtual romantic relationships on the stability of the Saudi family, and verify whether there were statistically significant differences between the study sample in building virtual romantic relationships according to gender, age, and economic status. To achieve the study objectives, a sample survey method was used. And The questionnaire as a tool for collecting data from the sample. The sample of the study was 100 cases of married men and women who were selected through a purposive sample from those who had virtual romantic relationships in family counseling centers in Riyadh, whose ages ranged from 18 to over 41 years old.
The study reached several findings, the most notable of which include: The reality of virtual romantic relationships in Saudi society some participants reported having previous virtual romantic relationships more than current ones, spending most of their time talking with those they have a relationship with, and the topics of the conversation between them were often emotional. The most significant motivation for these virtual romantic relationships was emotional gratification, also the ease of building relationships on virtual platforms, which helped to establish it. The difficulties they faced with their life partners also prompted them to establish virtual romantic relationships. As for the impact of virtual romantic relationships on Saudi family stability, these relationships have caused marital problems, reduced family interaction, and left them feeling constantly tense and stressed. The results also revealed no statistically significant differences among the study sample in establishing virtual romantic relationships in Saudi society based on gender, age, and economic status.
